Fahrenheit 451 assessments

                  Fahrenheit 451 assessments      Dino Chiu

                •              Montag believes that books are alive, he realize that behind every book is a person and that the books are the thoughts and mind of its author.  Even if the author died, their thoughts and mind will still be in the books they have written and their minds would never die with their body which is why books are alive. I agreed with Montag and believe that books are alive because they contain the mind and soul of the author, when reading a book, you will feel like you are talking to the author and understanding his thoughts.

                •              Guy Montag :

Internal conflict: The mystery of books

Guy Montag is curious about books. He wonders just what do books contains and why do people want to burn them.  After he read them he feels that what the world is missing are books. When he read the books, he feels that it teaches him about emotions and it makes him think about the world and think about the meaning of life. He feels that books were important and even though he knows that it was against the law he was determined to read them.  One example from the book is on page 73-74 in which Montag says:

“Is it because we’re having so much fun at home we’ve forgotten the world? Is it because we’re so rich and the rest of the world’s so poor and we just don’t care if they are? I’ve heard rumors; the world is starving, but we’re well fed Is it true, the world works hard and we play? Is that why we’re hated so much? I’ve heard rumors about hate, too, once in a long while, over the years. Do you know why? I don’t, that’s sure! Maybe the books can get us half out of the cave. They just might stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes!

Which is why Montag decided to stand up against the whole world and to speak out his own voice and he don’t want to be like the others, controlled by happiness; But then this caused him great fear in his head and he is always afraid of someone finding out his secret and now he is always afraid of working as a fireman because afraid his captain would find out his secret.

External conflict: His wife Mildred

Montag’s wife Mildred is completely drugged by technology. She spent her whole day watching television, and she loves the televisions so much that she call it ‘her family’. She once tried to suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills. Her relationship between Montag is not good because she care about her television or her ‘family’ more than her husband one example is on page 77 on the book:

“Millie, does—“He licked his lips.”Does your ‘family’ love you, love you very much, love you with all their heart and soul, Millie?”

He felt her blinking slowly at the back of his neck. “Why’d you ask a silly question like that?”

He felt he wanted to cry, but nothing would happen to his eye or his mouth.

From this paragraph, you can see how Mildred cared only about the television even if Montag love her with all his heart and soul. Which is why Montag is sad, because he felt that his wife don’t love him at all and caused him a lot of conflicts.

                •

                •                 3. For Guy Montag I chosen the song: “Just Stand Up”, this song is dedicated towards people who got cancer and telling them not to give up but to keep on fighting, stand up toward cancer. I think that Montag is just like the cancer people, he don’t give up and he stands up to the government and rejected being controlled by them and wanted his own thoughts and freedom. One part in the lyrics that best described Montag is “You don’t gotta be a prisoner in your  mind, If you fall dust it off you can live your life.” This part of the lyrics seems like as if it is describing Montag because Montag did have a problem with his mind and it is always his thoughts that drives him to do actions. But then in the end he learned to get free of his mind by reading all the books and to be a free thinker. He continued to live his life and finding ways to live even if the government is coming to hunt him down. This is why I chose that part of the lyric to describe Montag.

4. A letter to save a book

   ” Dear firemen

If you really need to burn the library, then I beg that you don’t burn the book ” World of Fables” I know that to you, the book contains nothing but nonsenses, and stupid stories that would make people dumb. That’s not true, the fables teaches young children how to be good to the society and to be responsible and good. Have you not notice the crime rates of the city? Can’t you see that children are getting more violent every day, fighting each other? It is because no one is teaching them how to be good and not to fight. The children is the future of this city and you wouldn’t want them to grow up to be violent adults fighting with knives and guns right? So please save the book and teach children the proper way to behave so our city can have a brighter future.”

Compare and Contrast Essay

Compare and Contrast between Cassius and Brutus

Cassius and Brutus are both important characters in the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by Shakespeare; they both took part in the most dramatic scenes in the play. Both of these characters shared a lot of similarities; however, in personalities they are very different.

One of the most similar of Cassius and Brutus is that they are both one of noblest and most honorable people in Rome, and both of them ended up in the same path throughout the play. They are both conspirators that assassinated Caesar and in the end they both fought the battle against Antony and Octavius, and both Cassius and Brutus died the same way. However, even though they been through the same parts and plots they have contrasting personalities.

Cassius has a cunning personality and he is narrow minded and impulsive. His narrow minded and impulsive personality can be shown in his argument with Brutus when he became angry over a very small insult and even took the issue of the argument so seriously that he even went to the point of offering his life just to prove he is right. Cassius impulsiveness was also demonstrated when he kills himself when he heard that Titinius is captured without thinking first whether or not it is true that his friend his captured. Cassius’s impulsive personality also led to his downfall when he murders Caesar through jealousy and anger without thinking clearly the consequences of killing him, and because of his murder of Caesar he and his conspirators were condemned by the Romans as traitors and murderers instead of bringers of justice; if Cassius had think about the consequences before he killed Caesar then he wouldn’t had been condemned to death and defeated by Antony’s army. Cassius is also a very cunning person as he could easily fool Brutus into taking part in this plan by playing his mind into thinking that Caesar is taking over Rome as a Tyrant.

Brutus is different from Cassius for he is always calm, straight forward, and noble, but he is also very gullible. He showed his calmness in his argument with Cassius when he replied Cassius’s every word with a simple explanation without any hesitation or stuttering. He is also very noble, and it is his nobleness that brings him to his end when he was tricked into killing Caesar for the good of the republic. He loved Rome so much that he is willing to kill his friend, Caesar to protect the city from Caesar’s ambition. Brutus is also very straightforward; he makes statements on people without any exceptions. This could be shown when straightforward in his argument with Cassius he told Cassius all the negative things he thinks about him without sugar coating his words.  Brutus also has a gullible personality, and would believe anything that anyone said to him, this is how he got tricked into being part of the plot. He immediately believes that Caesar is a tyrant when he saw the fake letters from the people, he didn’t stop to think whether the words of the people matches with his own opinion of Caesar, and he immediately believes the fake letters.

In many ways, the personalities of Brutus and Cassius differs from each other greatly, and it is because of the difference between the characters that we were able to understand a character more by also knowing the personality of the character’s opposite. This is how Shakespheare often show his characters, by using contrasting characters to emphasize the characteristics of a major character.

The Good Earth Persuasion Essay

Mar/ 6

                                                           Man’s relationship to the land

Is the relationship between men and earth important? A lot of people today said that humans could live without the land because now science and technology are taking care of the needs of humans, so most people today believe that science and technology is the solution to every problem; however, all these people failed to realize that even though science and technology makes our lives easier and better, it couldn’t guarantee survival of the human race. For example, science could make foods taste better or healthier, but it is unable to provide food for humans. Humans still needs the land in order to grow food and survive. The novel The Good Earth clearly shows the importance of land to men, even though the story took place in a time when science hadn’t been fully developed the explanations of men relationships to land from the book could be applied to modern life. There are two main reasons why men’s relationship to the land is important given from The Good Earth.

The first reason The Good Earth gave for the importance of men’s relationship to the land is that land provides life to men. In the book the main character Wang Lung completely entrusted his life onto the piece of land he owns, his food came from the harvests of his land and his wealth came from the profits earned from selling the crops he grew from his land. Wang Lung’s life depends on the land because the land gave him food and it also gave him money so he could use the money to buy more things he need for survival such as tools he need to farm the land, workers to help him fix his house, or even more land. Without the land, Wang Lung’s family would have starved to death. In contrast to Wang Lung’s life, the fall of the Great House of Hwang also proves to be great evidence that land provides life to men. The Hwang’s family owned a lot of good land that were excellent for growing food because of it’s nutrition, for it is the selling of the crops that came from the land that gave the Hwang family their wealth; however, the Hwang family broke their relationship to the land when they started to sell the land they owned. As soon as they started to sell their land, the Hwang family got poorer and poorer because they didn’t realize they have sold their source of wealth! In the end their separation from the land led to their downfall when they lost too many money, and ceased to be wealthy and great anymore.

The second reason men’s relationship to the land is important is because land teaches men about the values of hard work. In The Good Earth Wang Lung knew that he had to work on the land everyday because the land could only bear fruit when he toiled on it and care for it, all the food that Wang Lung ate came from his own hard work; however, when Wang Lung became wealthy he became more idle and lazy and spends everyday in his own pleasures. He starts to go to the teahouse everyday instead of staying with his family, and he completely neglects his wife and his children and spends everyday lying in the sun or visiting women. When he finally realized the evil of his idleness, it was too late. Wang Lung’s wives had died neglected and knowing her own husband called her ugly, and Wang Lung’s sons only spend money like water to make themselves look great and wealthy without thinking where those money had came from. The cause of all these idleness and evil is because the huge wealth of Wang Lung made him left his land to laborers and moved into the city away from the land. From the land Wang Lung had learned about the importance of hard work and also the values of money, Wang Lung came to realize how much the land had taught him and he began to turn from the city life more to his land and spend his last days on his land.

Now that we have examined the reasons that men’s relationship to land is important. So we should encourage people to show more respect to the land and also to enjoy nature’s beauty. Also try to visit the countryside often, it may not be as luxury as the city, but it is a place of peace and hard work. There should be more interactions between men and land because men owed a lot of things to the land.

Response to Lord of the flies

Response to The Lord of the flies

A story or novel always came in many different genres such as science fiction, horror, or actions. Even though the themes of the stories are very different they all have one thing in common: they always have conflicts between good characters and evil characters. Of course in many stories the good characters defeat the evil characters at end of the conflicts because the author wants to persuade the readers that evilness always comes to an end, and the good and righteous ones would emerge victorious; however, sometimes the righteous ones fail to defeat evil and it is the evil characters that emerges as the victor because people desires evil more than goodness. In my opinion, the novel Lord of the Flies provides the best example how human’s desire for evil would lead to the downfall of righteousness and goodness.

In Lord of the flies, the story begins with a tribe of stranded kids on an island that were led by a boy named Ralph who is the protagonist of the story. Ralph’s tribe is a representation of the modern society today with characteristics of a successful civilization such as laws, houses, and occupation; however, the lawful society of Ralph began to break apart because of a kid name Jack. Jack desires to have fun and to hunt and kill animals, but the laws and hard works of the tribe forbidden him to enjoy the pleasures of killing and hunting; as a result, Jack left Ralph’s tribe and set up a tribe of his own. This new tribe represents a chaotic world, in which the people enjoys themselves and finds pleasure in killing and hunting, these are all actions that are viewed as evil in the civilized and righteous world. The later progresses of the story differs greatly from other novels, Jack’s evil tribe gained a lot of followers quickly because of the pleasures of it provides such as good food, and excitement. More and more kids left Ralph’s civilized tribe to join Jack’s barbaric tribe, and slowly the kids become so wild and violent that they hardly represent humans at all and turn into savages. In the end the law and order of Ralph’s tribe couldn’t stop the violence and brutality of the savages, and Jack’s tribe with its numerous followers destroys the civilized tribe of Ralph, leaving Ralph to run for his life on the island.

What the author is trying to show is evil is very tempting to humans because it holds everything that humans desires such as pleasure and wealth, and the increase in humans leaving the righteous ways to follow the evil ways could greatly undermine our modern ‘good’ society. The reason that humans tend to do evil is because of the benefits such as pleasures, or wealth. For example a person would like to steal money instead of working to earn money because it promises him huge wealth in a very short time; however, evil couldn’t destroy our modern society because of the good teachings that schools and churches teaches to people ever since they are children, the people choose to follow good ways because they know it is right.

In conclusion, good and righteous people couldn’t defeat evil all the time. The reason evil cannot be defeated is because there are too many people who desire following the evil ways rather than the good ways, and the righteous have to use evil ways such as violence and trickery to fight evil itself. The novel Lord of the flies shows a perfect example of evil defeating good.

                                        Character Analysis of Fagan Kai

Fagan from ‘The Last Sin eater’ is a major character because he is one of the main characters in the story besides his friend Cadi, and he dominates or takes part in all the major events in the story. Fagan helped Cadi through the entire story, and he often shares his feelings and thoughts with Cadi. Fagan also persuades Cadi to take big and bold actions all the time, for example when he and Cadi is from Brogan in the mountains he told Cadi that they should go down the mountain to search for more answers about the village’s past despite the dangers of meeting Brogan down in the village. In conclusion, Fagan is a major character because he is the main companion of Cadi the protagonist and he helps Cadi throughout the story and takes part in all the major scenes in the book.

He is a brave young youth, who stands up for what is right and what is wrong. He could always recognize if something is injustice or if something is right. He is helpful to his friends and would do anything to help them even if it means him getting into trouble. Fagan’s courage and righteousness could be seen at the part where his father is coming to kill the prophet. Fagan refuses to obey his father because he knows that his father’s actions are wrong, and he shows his courage by standing against his father trying to protect the prophet instead of running away. Fagan’s helpfulness to his friends can be shown when he helps Cadi to find the sin eater even when he know his father would be angry at him if he looks for the sin eater; however, Fagan could also be very stubborn, he is always determined to know he wants to know or gets what he wants. This stubborn personality is displayed when Fagan discovered the cave painting in the caves that the sin eater lives in, and after seeing the cave painting Fagan is determined to know what happened in the past by going down to he village and asking Miz Elda about the painting. No matter how anyone warns him about the danger of meeting his father or persuade him to leave this issue alone, Fagan still insists on knowing about the truth, this truly demonstrates his stubbornness.

Fagan’s main conflict in the story is his conflict with his father. Fagan wants to escape his evil father, but he still has a little bit of love for him. Fagan is different from his father and his two brothers because he is more sensible and less violent and hot headed then his father, he is also less obedient then his two brothers who will always do whatever Brogan tells them to do without thinking whether the orders are right or wrong.

It is this difference between his father and his brothers that cause this conflict because Brogan dislike the personality of his son and Fagan dislike the personality of his father. Brogan dislike Fagan’s personality because Fagan is different from his brothers, he thinks before he do any actions and he would often doubt his father’s orders and actions; however, this personality outrages his father because Brogan expects everyone in the village to follow his orders and he hates anyone that dares to challenge his position as the village elder; therefore Brogan treats Fagan very badly and would even kill him without any hesitation. Fagan hates the way his father treats him, but he couldn’t fight back or protest because he knows it is his own father that he is fighting against; thus creates a conflict within Fagan: whether to love his father, or hate his father.

Reflective essay

                                                          Do What You Like

When I was young, I loved to win. I enjoyed the glory of victory, and the fame I won from it. I generally lived for the fame and glory because I believed that without fame and glory life is meaningless. Which is why I trained myself everyday in sportsmanship, knowledge, literature, anything that can be competed for victory. This is the kind of happiness I enjoyed; however, as I got older I became less and less satisfied with all the victories I had earned, and I didn’t know why I just don’t feel happy despite the fact that I won all the time. That is until I learned that there is a different kind of happiness, a happiness that is even greater then the happiness of winning and being famous. It all began when I went on a camping trip with my family.

I was camping with my family beside a small rural village. As my family started to set up the tents and the fireplace, I decided to take a walk and explore village. It was truly a very rural village, the windows are broken and the wooden doors are creaking. The people here lived a very simple agricultural life, it was like as if they were completely locked out from the outside world. But despite the village is rural and poor, it left me a memory I could never forget.

I was walking through some rice fields when I saw a couple of kids playing soccer on the dusty road. They don’t have goals, uniforms, or a coach there to teach them at all, they were simply kicking an old and worn soccer ball around. I paid attention to them at first, thinking they are poor and lowly children who would never understand the fun of actually playing in a game of soccer with score to earn and a golden cup to bring home. But as I stood and watched them, I became more and more aware of their skillfulness with the ball. They were all very good at soccer, and they are good at a lot of tricks and moves that I never seen before in my life. I was greatly amazed by their skillfulness, and I wondered just where could they have learned those skills if they are living in the middle of nowhere.

As I was wondering this question, I saw a woman walking toward me. She saw me and smiled at me, and then she said “ You seemed to enjoy watching those children play, I came here to pick my son up, did you see him? He is the one wearing the blue shirt, over there. He loves soccer so much, he played with his friends everyday, it was something he greatly enjoys.”  Hearing her words, I came to realize why the children were so skillful, it is because they loved to play soccer! Playing soccer is something that they enjoyed really much, which is why they play it everyday and each day they got better and better! It is the joy and happiness of doing something they love that motivated them in training in it, not because of their love of gaining fame and glory.

After my encounter with these children I came to realize how I spent my whole life seeking for fame, but never really ask myself what is it that I really enjoyed doing. I now knew that the reason I don’t feel happy about my life is because I gained fame and glory for a lot of things that I am not even interested in. I learned that a meaningful life isn’t just about winning everything, but it was also about enjoying what you like to do. From that day on focused less on whether I won something, and focused more on doing what I liked to do. I lived a cheerful and happy life from that day on, which just goes to show that you won’t truly find happiness in fame and glory, but in your interest.

My old saxophone

Descriptive essay

Jan/26th

                                                                                  My old saxophone

At a dusty corner in the attic of my house, lies my old saxophone. The shiny silver metal is now dull and black, and the pipes are clogged with moss and fungi. My saxophone looks like those dark old pipes that the English people smoked with in the 19th century, it was clogged with moss like a pipe clogged with soot and the dust rising from its bowl looks like smoke. The buttons and keys dropped everywhere when you picked it up, and some parts of the instrument are dented in.

However, my instrument isn’t old and broken when I first played it. It was shiny and sparkling with glory, and the music it plays are as sweet as the caramel on a chocolate cake. I remembered the times when I used to spend hours and hours playing my saxophone in the attic, experimenting the different styles of music it can play. The saxophone brought me great joy and pride, and I always showed it to my friends as if it was a trophy I won. What I really liked about my instrument is that it is made out of silver colored bronze because like a white piano or a golden flute, the color went against the usual color seen on a saxophone, which is gold. When I was on stage with my band I could always hear my saxophone clear and loud above the mixtures of sound. I felt very proud of owning such a magnificent instrument.

I had a lot of great memories with my saxophone, but those memories didn’t last long. Like humans, instruments grew old as time went by and it just happened that my saxophone was too old to continue its glory. I was playing my saxophone one day when I heard a terrible hoarse sound like the voice of a person with sore throat coming from my saxophone. When my music teacher checks my saxophone he told me that my saxophone had a lot of fungi growing inside the pipe because of the lack of washing and good care. The fungi were impossible to remove, and thus silenced my saxophone forever. I greatly regretted my laziness to clean my saxophone, if I had taken better care of my instrument then this tragedy wouldn’t have happened, but it was all too late.

After that I got another saxophone, a plain golden cheap one that sounds more like the squawk of a crow rather than a saxophone; However, even though it was not as good as my original saxophone, I cleaned and took good care of it. The saxophone is still usable after five years, which really shows that taking responsibilities really do make a difference.

Should there be corporal punishments?

December 10, 2009

Should we use corporal punishments in school? Many adults today rejects the idea of corporal punishments in school because they think it is too cruel and violent; however, some adults supports corporal punishments because they believe children won’t listen to adults when they talk to them about their wrongdoings and would only learn their mistakes through the pain of corporal punishments, hence the saying “A yard of strap is worth a mile of talk. There are two main reasons in why corporal punishments should be banned from schools.

The first reason is the violence and brutality corporal punishments caused to the students. In the 19th century, corporal punishments were used in schools all over Europe. Students who studied in the schools during the 19th century still remembered the pains and sufferings they have to endure, there were cases of students being beaten with a cane for so many times that the blood continues to drip hours after the punishments, and their bodies were scarred for life. Corporal punishments also caused a lot of cases of students being beaten so badly that they were sent to hospitals, corporal punishments in the 19th century could be so cruel that some students even became crippled for life and even lost their sights! This is the reason why schools stopped using corporal punishments, they are disgusted and sickened by the awful treatments to students in the past and they start using better treatments like detention or community and service.

The second reason is because of the emotional effects of corporal punishments to the students. Teachers have found out that corporal punishments causes great emotional pains to the students that will be with them for their whole life. One effect of corporal punishments on student’s minds is their social health, studies have shown that adults or teenagers who have experienced a lot of corporal punishment before are often less active then other people or have social problems such as making friends, public speaking, and teamwork. Another effect corporal punishments have on students is the violent behaviors of the students. In the past teachers used corporal punishments because they believe the fear of the pain from the punishment could stop the students misbehaving; however, they soon found out that corporal punishment are ineffective in correcting a student’s misguided behaviors; instead the cruel punishments only makes the student more angry and more violent. The student won’t learn about his mistakes, and he would just be seeking revenge on the teacher who beats him. Adults soon learns that corporal punishment don’t help students, but only cause them physical and emotional pains that would be with them forever. They start to ban the use of corporal punishments from school.
In conclusion, there should be no corporal punishments. Corporal punishments are violent and painful and it hurts a person either physically or emotionally, and it is ineffective against misguided students. Schools that use corporal punishment should stop using it and to try using tranquil methods of teaching a student such as counseling them and helping them to understand why their actions are wrong. These methods are effective and useful, and they also help the student and encourage them to be good and responsible adults. The new method has help many teenagers and reduces the violent behaviors in school, showing a much better quality than school that uses corporal punishments.

Guess who’s coming for dinner
English 10
Dec 7 2009

Me: Thanks for coming for dinner. I know how much you all like tropical foods so I chose this restaurant! They are famous for their roast pork.
Jack: Where’s the meat! We want meat!
Piggy: That’s not a way to behave in a restaurant Jack. My auntie always teaches me table manners. You hold the spoon like this….
Jack: You talk too much, shut up!
Ralph: You can’t talk to my friend like this! You shut up, you savage!
Me: Guys! Guys! Be quiet! Sit down!
Me: *after the boys calms down* So, I heard you three were trapped on an island. Just how did you all survive? Surely things went messy without an adult around right?
Ralph: Well, at first things went smoothly. I gathered everyone together and I was voted as chief. We agreed to build a fire as a rescue signal, build shelters, and hunt pigs and gather fruits for fruits.
Me: That didn’t sound too bad. I’m sure you got rescued in just a few days right?
Piggy: No! After a few days we are still stranded, and it’s all Jack’s fault!
Jack: Are you accusing me! I’m doing what I’m supposed do! I hunt the pigs! I gave you meat!
Ralph: Pigs! Hunting! All you ever talk about is pig, pig, pig! You didn’t help with the shelters, and you destroyed our fire!
Me: Quiet! What is it you’re all talking about!
Ralph: We build a fire at the top of the mountain, and Jack split up his choir into groups. Half of the group looks after the fire and half of them hunt. But jack took both halves of the choir and went hunting! The fire went out, and there’s a ship passing by! We could have all been rescued if it wasn’t for Jack!
Jack: Who cares about the fire! I hunted a pig for them, and when I came back to the mountain Ralph just starts yelling into my face about that stupid fire! How dare he! He didn’t even help us hunt!
Me: The fire is important! It’s not right to abandon your responsibilities Jack.
Piggy: That’s what we are telling him, but he didn’t care! He even punches me and breaks my specs! *Piggy holds up his old broken spectacles*
Jack: Well, I apologized didn’t I? By the way, who said I have to listen to Ralph. He just gave people orders and tells them to do what he want while he sits back and do nothing! He is a coward like Piggy! That’s why I chose to leave his tribe!
Me: But if people don’t follow rules, the whole tribe would be in chaos! You will all become savages!
Ralph: That is what happens, Jack took all the biguns with him to the other tribe, and slowly more and more people went to his tribe. I don’t get it, why would they want to go to a savage tribe!
Jack: Ha! My tribe is more fun then your tribe! Your tribe is boring!
Me: But didn’t you want to get rescued? How are you going to get rescued if your tribe went hunting all the time?
Jack: Well… I did think about being rescued, I did want to get rescued… but… uh.
Ralph: See? I told you your tribe is wrong, I know how serious the situation is. Everyone wants to be rescued, but how are we going to get rescued if we play and hunt all the time? I tried to keep things under control, but Jack wouldn’t follow orders!
Jack: Who cares about orders? Who cares about the rules?
Ralph: The rules are all we got! If we don’t follow rules we will all become savages, just like your tribe.
Jack: At least my tribe is fun! We are brave and strong and we gave people meat! I keep everyone happy!
Piggy: But your tribe killed Simon! You are all thieves and murderers!
Me: Who’s Simon? Why is he killed?
Ralph: One of the boys, he got killed by Jack’s tribe when he came creeping out of the forest one night!
Me: That’s terrible! Why did you kill him Jack?
Jack: It’s his own fault he got killed, creeping out of the forest like an animal. We mistook him for a beast, and mistakes happen all the time.
Ralph: Jack’s tribe went completely out of control! He even tried to hunt me down and kill me!
Jack: You are in our way! You keep coming to my tribe and asking for trouble, how are we going to hunt if you keep getting into our way!
Piggy: Jack always causes the problems. Unlike, Ralph Jack is wild. He doesn’t follow rules, he doesn’t work together, and he doesn’t discuss things sensibly with Ralph! All he wants to do is to be a savage, hunting and killing. He turns everyone into a savage! We have two groups on the island. One is the civilized and sensible group, Ralph group. The other group is Jack’s savages
Me: Well Ralph, you are the leader. Why didn’t control him? Why didn’t you stop him?
Jack: He’s not a leader! He should not be the chief!
Ralph: I tried to explain to him the importance of rules and laws, but he just keeps saying, “Who cares!” I don’t what to do if someone said that. What would an adult do?
Me: Well, if a troublemaker wouldn’t learn his lessons the easy way then he should learn it the hard way!
Jack: I’m not a troublemaker!
Piggy: I know what you mean. Teachers with canes, polices with guns, jails.
Ralph: Is that how society today keeps people under control?
Me: That’s right. If you want to fight wildness and violence, you will have to be even more violent and wild!
Jack: How could Ralph control me? All he is good at is talking! He shouldn’t have been chief!
Ralph: My tribe is the sensible one! If it weren’t for my fire, we would all stay on the island till we die!
Me: Stop arguing! The past is the past.
Jack: I can’t see what’s wrong with hunting. What’s wrong in having fun!
Me: well, it is not wrong for a child to have fun; however, you are on an island and you need to be rescued. The situation is serious; Ralph is doing the right thing. He is sensible and he knew what is right and what is wrong! All you ever do is hunt, and you never have any ideas about he situation you are in right now. If it wasn’t for Ralph you could have been stuck on that island forever.
Piggy: Yeah. You don’t understand about the importance of law and rules. Nobody likes them, but nobody likes to have chaos too. Without laws, everything is not under control. How could we ever even hope to get rescued if things are chaotic?
